2013 marks the 125th anniversary of organized firefighting in North Wales and the surrounding communities with the official formation of the North Wales Hose Co. #1 after two devastating fires that occurred back to back in early December of 1888.
We can trace firefighting back to when North Wales was still a village.
1861-1862
The E. K. Freed & Co. mill on Main Street was destroyed by fire.
1865-1867
A fire brigade was formed and a hand pumper was purchased from Philadelphia. This was a success; however, it was later sold for scrap.
Fire protection for the town was again considered when on May 3, 1871, a photographic card and descriptive catalogue of a Silsby engine for extinguishing fire was presented to North Wales Borough council by a Dr. Kennedy. There was no recorded action taken. On September 7, 1888, the matter was again brought up for discussion as the Spring House Hotel had just been destroyed by fire. Council ordered hose, nozzles, a hose carriage and a building. This time they were serious.
